New Delhi: A day after Trinamool's second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee, was assaulted by a crowd, West Bengal witnessed renewed political turmoil on Sunday after senior TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was attacked and sustained injuries in his own constituency in West Bengal during a confrontation outside the Chanditala police station in Hooghly district.

Visuals from the scene show the moment Kalyan was struck on the head in Hooghly's Chanditala while police struggled to manage the crowd and he was then seen clutching his head before collapsing to the ground.

In an incident reminiscent of the public hostility directed at Abhishek in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas, the previous day, the Serampore MP was greeted by protesters waving black flags and “chor, chor' slogans.

Rejecting claims of a public outburst, the Serampore MP accused BJP workers of assaulting him and throwing an object at his head as he was heading to a TMC protest. The party has not yet issued a response.

What exactly happened?

The incident took place when Kalyan Banerjee and his supporters arrived at the Chanditala police station this morning to file a complaint regarding post-poll violence. The area falls within the Sreerampur Lok Sabha constituency, a seat Banerjee has held since 2009.

Footage shows the MP being hit from behind while walking, causing him to fall to the ground. After struggling to stay steady, he managed to stand up and was later spotted speaking to supporters with a makeshift bandage around his head.

Alleging an "attempt to murder," the MP claimed that BJP supporters had thrown a stone or cricket ball at him during the incident.

"I was coming alone when BJP workers threw something at me. I don't know whether it was a deuce ball or something else. Blood is coming out of my head." he added.

'10-15 goons shouted slogans'

Kalyan recounted that he had left his vehicle behind due to traffic congestion before the incident occurred.

"Suddenly, 10-15 goons shouted slogans and created a rivalry atmosphere. They abused me, but I kept proceeding, and at that time, a stone was thrown at my head. There was blood in my kurta and pajama. I had fallen on the road, and that time, a CRPF person came and rescued me," he told.

A visibly shaken MP questioned the targeting of elected representatives and blamed local BJP supporters for assaulting TMC members and also thanked the central forces for saving him, while bashing the Bengal Police as "silent, mute spectators".

The development comes just a day after TMC national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee allegedly faced an attack during a visit to Sonarpur, intensifying the political war between the ruling TMC and the BJP in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, a significant contingent of police and central forces has been deployed to Chanditala to head off any further violence.
