Ratlam: At least 3 people lost their lives and 10 others were injured late on Thursday night after a Tazia came into contact with a high-tension power line during a Muharram procession in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district. The Ratlam police confirmed the incident, which has marred the religious observance in Hatnara village, where residents were taking part in the annual commemoration.

According to the police, the tragedy took place at around 11.15 pm in Mewati Mohalla, an area that falls under the jurisdiction of Pipaluda police station. The locals stated that the Tazia, which was being carried through the locality, accidentally touched an overhead high-voltage cable. The contact triggered a powerful electric shock that immediately struck those bearing the structure.

A purported video has also surfaced on social media, claiming to be that of the tragic incident in Ratlam.

Police Confirm Deaths, Inquiry Underway

The sudden surge caused the carriers to collapse on the spot, while several bystanders also suffered injuries after coming into contact with the victims or the electrified Tazia. Following the deadly incident, a solemn procession tragically descended into panic and grief spread among the gathered crowd. The locals rushed to assist the injured before ambulances and police teams reached the scene.

Ratlam Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Kumar confirmed that 3 people had died in the incident, emphasising that an investigation has been initiated to establish the precise circumstances that led to the fatal electrocution. The police are examining the height of the Tazia, the route taken, and whether safety guidelines for processions near power lines were followed.

Meanwhile, the medical staff at Ratlam Medical College reported that the 3 victims brought to the facility had already succumbed to their injuries by the time they arrived. The remaining 10 injured are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals across the district. The doctors have not released details on the condition of those admitted to the hospital.

The incident has prompted renewed concerns about the safety of religious processions that pass beneath overhead power lines. The police have urged organisers to coordinate with the electricity department to ensure routes are clear of hazards.

Further details regarding the deadly incident are awaited.
