AAP Leader Lucky Oberoi Shot Dead Outside Gurdwara In Punjab's Jalandhar, Probe On
Reports state that Oberoi was struck by five bullets before being rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was pronounced dead. As per the cops, the victim was inside his Thar vehicle when the incident took place.
New Delhi: A wave of panic gripped Punjab today after a prominent local leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)- Lucky Oberoi- was fatally shot in broad daylight outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar’s Model Town, after unidentified attackers on a two-wheeler opened fire at him.
According to reports, Lucky was following his usual daily routine when he arrived at the gurdwara this morning at 8:15 am when assailants opened fire on him and Oberoi was struck by five bullets while he was in his car.
The victim was rushed to a nearby private hospital following the attack, where he where he died due to his injuries.
Oberoi was struck by five bullets
As per the cops, the victim was parking his car out side the Gurdwara when the incident took place and according to sources, some of the bullets struck him in the chest and head.
Following the brazen broad-daylight shooting, security has been significantly tightened across the city as authorities work to contain the fallout from the tragedy.
What was the motive?
Visuals from the spot showed police personnel securing the perimeter, restricting public movement near the gurdwara and inspecting the surrounding lanes.
Officers were questioning local residents and shopkeepers, while teams reviewed nearby CCTV footage in an effort to trace the attackers and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the killing.
Witness statements were being recorded, and the motive behind the attack was yet to be established.
Opposition mounts attack
Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, sharply criticized the state government after the daylight murder of Oberoi in Jalandhar.
He alleged that Punjab's law and order situation has "collapsed" under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's administration.
In a post on X, he wrote, "Law and order in Punjab has collapsed under @BhagwantMann's watch. The shocking daylight murder of @AAPPunjab leader Lucky Oberoi outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar, exposes the grim reality: if even ruling party leaders aren't safe, what hope remains for ordinary citizens?"
Following the incident, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that "law and order in complete collapse in Punjab."
In a post on X, he wrote, "Once again law and order in complete collapse in Punjab. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Lucky Oberoi was shot dead outside a gurudwara in Jalandhar's Model Town. AAP is a Paap for Punjab."
Who was Lucky?
Oberoi was a well-known political figure in the region and his wife had previously run in the municipal elections representing AAP, and he was recognised as a key aide to Rajwinder Kaur Thiara, the party's Cantt constituency in-charge.
Meanwhile, no arrests have yet been made in the case and further probe in this matter is underway.
