New Delhi/Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has formally resigned from the party during his meeting with party national chief Nitin Nabin, bringing an end to months of speculation over his role and future within the party.

According to sources, Annamalai submitted a five-page resignation letter to Nabin even as BJP leaders reportedly persuade him to reconsider his decision.

After submitting his resignation to the national party chief, Annamalai met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Sources said the meeting lasted for nearly an hour. Following his meeting with Shah, Annamalai reportedly left directly for Coimbatore, where anticipation is building over a detailed public statement expected from him in the coming days regarding his future political plans.

Sources familiar with the development said Annamalai's decision to quit was made well before he boarded the flight to Delhi and that the meetings with the BJP leadership were not aimed at negotiating his future but rather at expressing gratitude to a party that shaped his public life over the past six years.

"His mind was already made up before the Delhi visit. The meetings were more about thanking the leadership for the opportunities, experiences and political journey the BJP provided him," a source said.

Annamalai is also understood to have met senior RSS leaders during his Delhi visit, underscoring the significance of the moment and the effort to ensure an amicable separation despite his decision to leave the party.

‘Wished to part ways cordially’

Sources said the former Tamil Nadu BJP chief conveyed to the leadership that he wished to part ways on cordial terms and without bitterness.

"He wanted to leave respectfully. He told the leadership that he remains grateful to the BJP but now wants to chart his own course," a source aware of the discussions said.

The resignation comes after nearly six months of uncertainty surrounding Annamalai's position within the party. Following his replacement by Nainar Nagendran as Tamil Nadu BJP president, sources say Annamalai had been waiting for a definitive decision from the central leadership regarding his future role in the state.

While discussions reportedly included possibilities ranging from a Rajya Sabha berth to a national organisational role, Annamalai remained focused on building his political future in Tamil Nadu. Sources had earlier indicated that he accepted the prospect of a Rajya Sabha position with the understanding that he would continue to play a significant role in the state's politics.

However, the lack of clarity over that role appears to have ultimately pushed him towards the exit door.

BJP reluctant?

Even now, BJP leaders are said to be reluctant to let him go. Sources indicate that the party is still exploring options to retain him, including offering a prominent national responsibility. Annamalai was reportedly asked not to leave Delhi until further instructions.

The resignation is expected to have ramifications far beyond the BJP.

What next?

Sources close to Annamalai revealed that his next political project will be centred on nationalism and aimed at creating an alternative political narrative in Tamil Nadu, where Dravidian parties have dominated for decades.

According to those familiar with the plans, Annamalai has already finalised preparations for launching a people's movement that will initially function as a mass outreach platform before eventually being converted into a full-fledged political party.

The blueprint is believed to resemble a grassroots mobilisation effort rather than a traditional party structure in its first phase, allowing him to directly engage with volunteers, youth and supporters across the state.

Sources also indicated that Annamalai is expected to address a press conference, where he will formally outline his future plans and explain the reasons for his departure from the BJP.

Significantly, those close to him say social media will become the primary vehicle for his political communication going forward.

"From now on, most of his messaging will happen through videos and digital platforms," a source said, suggesting that Annamalai plans to leverage the large online following he built during his tenure as BJP state president.

Political observers believe Annamalai's move is also shaped by his assessment of Tamil Nadu's changing political landscape, particularly after the emergence of actor-turned-politician Vijay as a serious electoral force.

According to sources familiar with his thinking, Annamalai believes the state's politics is undergoing a structural shift.

"There is no leader today who can directly take on Vijay. The Dravidian era is over. Politics based solely on language issues will no longer work. The politics of Tamil Nadu has changed," a source close to the former BJP leader said.

That assessment is believed to have strengthened his conviction that a new political platform is required to appeal to younger voters and a rapidly evolving electorate.

Show of strength: The ‘poster support’

Amid speculation over his departure, Annamalai’s supporters in Madurai erected posters urging him to take his "next avatar" and "save Tamil Nadu", reflecting growing enthusiasm among sections of his support base for an independent political journey.

A former IPS officer who joined the BJP in 2020, Annamalai quickly rose to become the party's most recognisable face in Tamil Nadu. Through aggressive campaigns, state-wide yatras and relentless attacks on the ruling DMK, he significantly expanded the BJP's visibility in a state where the party has traditionally struggled for political relevance.

Possible points of ‘contention’

However, his hardline and independent style often contrasted with the BJP leadership's preference for broader coalition-building. The party's decision to revive its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections was widely viewed as a strategic shift that reduced Annamalai's influence within the state's political calculations.

His recent public criticism of the CBSE's revised three-language policy further fuelled speculation that he was increasingly positioning himself independently on issues tied to Tamil identity and regional sentiment.

With his resignation now submitted and plans for a nationalist people's movement reportedly ready, Tamil Nadu politics appears poised for a new chapter. Whether Annamalai's next venture evolves into a major political force remains to be seen, but his departure from the BJP marks a significant political development in the state.
