BJP MP Vinod Tawde Urges Creation of National Skin Bank to Aid Burn Victims

New Delhi: BJP MP Vinod Tawde has called for the establishment of a National Skin Bank to enhance treatment options for burn victims across India.  

Raising the matter in Parliament, Tawde said his advocacy was driven by a personal tragedy after the death of his mother. He highlighted that donated skin serves as a crucial temporary covering for severe burn injuries. This helps prevent infections, minimise fluid loss, and improve patients’ chances of survival.  

Tawde urged the central government to develop a robust nationwide system. Key measures he proposed include expanding skin donation and retrieval networks, setting up additional skin banks, strengthening cold-chain infrastructure, and boosting public awareness so that life-saving treatment becomes more widely accessible.  

He noted that raising awareness about skin donation could transform severe burn care in India. Unlike organ transplants, skin grafts require no blood-group matching, and donated skin can be preserved for up to five years. Strengthening the skin-banking framework through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), he said, would help save countless lives.
