New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi was appointed as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly on Sunday, marking a historic first for the national capital.
AAP Names Atishi as LoP
The decision was made during a meeting of AAP MLAs, attended by party chief Arvind Kejriwal and the party's 22 legislators. Announcing the appointment, AAP MLA Gopal Rai said, "In the legislative party meeting, it has been unanimously decided that Atishi will be the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly."
Atishi, the MLA from Kalkaji, previously succeeded Kejriwal as Delhi’s youngest Chief Minister in September 2024. In the last AAP government, she held key portfolios, including education, power, water, PWD, and services, as the only woman in the cabinet.
Historic Political Face-Off
This is the first time a woman will lead the opposition in the Delhi Assembly. Additionally, for the first time, a woman LoP will be up against a woman Chief Minister— BJP ’s Rekha Gupta, who led her party to a decisive victory in the February 5 elections. The BJP secured 48 of the 70 assembly seats, ending AAP’s decade-long rule.
Kejriwal and several top AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia, also lost their seats in the elections.
