9 Dead, 15 Injured After Boiler Explosion Rocks Chhattisgarh Power Plant, Several Feared Trapped

New Delhi: A major boiler explosion at a Vedanta Power Plant in Singhitari village of Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, triggered panic and chaos on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident reportedly occurred around 2:00 PM, sending shockwaves across the facility as workers scrambled to escape.

Casualties Reported, Several Feared Trapped

According to officials, at least nine workers have been killed and 15 others injured in the explosion.

However, initial reports suggest that the number of injured could be significantly higher, with around 30 to 40 workers reportedly suffering serious injuries, many of them in critical condition.

Sakti district SP Praful Thakur confirmed, "Nine people died, and 15 were injured in a boiler blast at Vedanta Power Plant in Singhi Tarai area of Sakti district. The injured have been taken to the hospital in Raigarh."

Some workers are also feared to be trapped at the site.

The sudden explosion led to a stampede-like situation inside the plant as workers rushed to safety.

Several workers reportedly sustained severe burn injuries due to the intensity of the blast.

Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion may have been caused by a tube rupture inside the boiler, although the exact cause is yet to be officially confirmed.

However, exact cause of the blast is not known yet at the time of writing this report. 

On the incident, a spokesperson from the power plant said, "An unfortunate incident occurred at one of the boiler units at our Singhitarai plant on the afternoon of 14 April 2026, involving personnel from our sub-contractor, NGSL, which operates and maintains the unit. Our immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical assistance and treatment for all those affected. We are extending full support to the injured and are closely coordinating with medical teams and local authorities. We are in the process of ascertaining details, and a thorough investigation has been initiated in coordination with our partner and relevant authorities.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the families of those affected during this difficult time."

Rescue Operations Underway

Following this incident, Police, fire brigade teams, and senior administrative officials rushed to the spot soon after the explosion.

Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately, and the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials stated that the situation is now under control, though concerns remain over the condition of critically injured workers.

Authorities have assured that a thorough probe will be carried out to determine responsibility and prevent such incidents in the future.
