Crackdown on Narcotics: 70 Smugglers Arrested As Part of Anti-Drug Drive in Punjab

Chandigarh: Punjab Police on Monday said 70 drug smugglers, including two who were caught after an exchange of fire, have been arrested as part of the ongoing anti-drugs drive in the state. 

In the drive, a total of 4.63 kg heroin, 500 grams ganja, 100 grams opium, 1548 intoxicant tablets, and Rs 1.32 lakh in cash have been recovered from the possession of the arrested drug smugglers. 

Special Director General of Police (DGP) Arpit Shukla said that the Amritsar Rural Police arrested Jagtar Singh and Angrez Singh on Saturday, confiscating 1 kilogram of ICE (methamphetamine) and Rs 1.4 lakh in cash from them.

He mentioned that during Jagtar's transport for recovery, he attempted to flee near the Defence drain in Attari, forcing the police team to open fire, injuring his right leg. The accused was recaptured and received immediate medical care, Shukla added.

In a separate operation, the Amritsar Commissionerate Police apprehended a notorious drug smuggler, Sahil alias Neela, from Faizpura in Amritsar, following a brief exchange of gunfire near Palm Garden Colony, within the jurisdiction of Sadar Police Station.

Shukla stated that as police teams were pursuing the suspect, Sahil fired at them, leading to a retaliatory exchange. 

A .32 bore pistol was recovered from Sahil's possession.

The Special DGP further said the state government has enforced a three-pronged strategy 'Enforcement, De-addiction and Prevention (EDP)’ to eradicate drugs from the state.
