‘Deescalation, Dialogue & Diplomacy Key’: India Welcomes Iran-US Ceasefire
India has welcomed the ceasefire in West Asia, urging de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy. The statement highlights concerns over global energy supply and stresses the need for safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
New Delhi: India has welcomed the announcement of a two‑week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, describing it as a crucial step toward lasting peace in West Asia. In its first official statement, New Delhi reiterated that de‑escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy are the only sustainable path to end the ongoing conflict.
The war in West Asia had escalated sharply over the past month, with missile strikes, naval confrontations, and repeated warnings about the Strait of Hormuz - one of the world’s most vital energy corridors. The fighting disrupted global oil supplies, unsettled trade routes, and triggered volatility in international markets.
On April 8, both Washington and Tehran confirmed the truce, each side portraying it as a victory. The agreement immediately eased tensions in the region and brought some stability to energy prices, though analysts caution that the pause remains fragile.
India’s statement highlighted both humanitarian concerns and strategic interests. Officials noted that the conflict has already caused immense suffering to civilians and disrupted global energy supply chains. They stressed the importance of ensuring unimpeded freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a lifeline for international commerce.
India’s official statement reads:
“We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia. As we have continuously advocated earlier, de‑escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict. The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks. We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz.”
