Fresh Gunfight In Tamenglong Sparks Panic; Violence Also Reported in Imphal East-Kangpokpi Belt

Tensions escalated further in Manipur on Friday after a fresh gunfight erupted in Tamenglong district, even as another violent incident was reported along the Imphal East-Kangpokpi border.

According to initial reports, an exchange of fire broke out around 8:30 am at New Kaiphundai village under Tousem subdivision, within the jurisdiction of Tousem Police Station. The gunfight reportedly involved cadres of ZUF and NSCN (IM) along the strategic NH-37 corridor.

The sudden outbreak of violence triggered panic among residents, with villagers fleeing to safer locations to protect their lives. No casualties have been reported so far. A similar gunfight had taken place in the same area around four months ago, underscoring persistent volatility in the region.

Parallel Violence in Imphal East-Kangpokpi

In a separate incident, fresh violence also erupted in the Pukhao area along the Imphal East-Kangpokpi border. Suspected Kuki militants reportedly opened fire when a group of Meitei villagers allegedly attempted to enter a nearby hill area to collect firewood.

The area, considered highly sensitive and lying along the faultline between valley and hill communities, witnessed several rounds of firing, triggering fear and chaos among locals. Residents were seen fleeing the area amid the gunfire.

Visuals from the spot showed signs of fresh firing, though there is no immediate confirmation of injuries or casualties.

Security forces have since been deployed in strength in both locations to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. The region remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments.

The back-to-back incidents highlight the fragile security situation in Manipur, where sporadic violence continues despite heavy deployment of central and state forces.
