Fresh Violence In Manipur’s Kangpokpi: Armed Miscreants Torch Several Naga Houses

Kangpokpi: Fresh violence was reported in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after armed miscreants allegedly attacked a Liangmai Naga village and set fire to several houses late Tuesday night, triggering fresh tension in the area.

The incident took place at around 10 pm on Tuesday at Tokpa Liangmai Naga village, located between Mahika and Lower Thanamba villages and near Tumnoupokpi Thangal village, officials said.

According to reports, the attackers fired several rounds before setting fire to multiple houses in the village. The exact number of houses damaged was still being ascertained, with most of the affected structures reportedly being kutcha houses.

However, reports indicate that at least nine houses belonging to members of the Liangmai Naga community were completely gutted in the late-night attack.

Local accounts have put the number of houses burnt at around six, while officials are yet to provide a final figure. The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identity of those responsible remain unclear.

Villagers have expressed concern over their safety and urged the authorities to conduct an immediate investigation and strengthen security in the area. The village remains tense following the incident.

Some local residents have alleged that suspected armed Kuki groups were behind the attack. There is, however, no official confirmation of the identity or affiliation of the attackers, and the allegations could not be independently verified.

The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions in parts of Manipur, where sporadic violence and attacks on homes and properties have continued to pose a security challenge.

Police and security forces are assessing the situation and working to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible for the arson.

The incident has once again raised concerns over the fragile security situation in Kangpokpi, particularly in areas where different communities live in close proximity.
