Firing Outside Delhi’s Jamia University Gate, Police Probe After Clash Between Students and Outsiders
A shooting occurred at Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia University during a dispute between students and outsiders.
New Delhi: A shooting incident was reported on Tuesday outside Gate Number 13 of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University following a dispute between a group of outsiders and university students.
According to police officials, no formal complaint has been filed yet in connection with the matter.
They further clarified that the incident did not take place inside the Jamia campus and added that no student or individual associated with the university was involved in the firing.
Further reports confirmed two rounds of bullets were shot at the site. Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
Protest Over Batla House Anniversary March
The incident came a day after students held a protest in Jamia Millia Islamia in response to the detention of several participants during a march on Monday marking the 17th anniversary of the Batla House encounter. The demonstration was organised by student groups, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI).
Student organisations demanded the resignation of Jamia’s security advisor, Syed Abdul Rashid, a public apology from the proctorial team, and an independent inquiry into the conduct of staff during the protest. AISA reiterated its long-standing call for a judicial probe into the 2008 Batla House encounter.
In their statements, student groups alleged manhandling of protesters, including female students. They claimed students were dragged from the campus, detained, and subjected to violence by guards and police under the supervision of the security advisor. Delhi Police stated that students were detained only after repeated warnings, as they attempted to march outside the campus despite prior instructions.
Additional personnel were deployed to maintain law and order during the protest. Video clips circulating on social media appear to show scuffles and the use of force during the intervention.
