New Delhi: Urging the citizens of the country to have more children, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday said that population management is necessary before India loses advantage of its demographic dividend in the upcoming decades.

Speaking at the Republic Plenary Summit 2025 , Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said the time has come to stabilise the population figures and gain maximum advantage of India’s youth population.

“Population of China, Japan, and Europe is declining. Only up to 2047 will we have this advantage. 65% of the Indian population is under the age of 35. No other country is having this advantage. The problem in South India is that we implemented early family planning, and now the population is falling. Now the time has come when we have to correct it. We have to stabilise the population,” Chief Minister Naidu said.

When asked if South Indians should have more kids, Chandrababu Naidu affirmed, “That’s what I am saying”.

Chandrababu Naidu Urge Citizens To Have More Children

Highlighting his government’s new proposal of ‘more than two-child’ policy, which makes candidates ineligible to contest local body polls if they have less than two children, CM Naidu said, “I had announced earlier that to control the population, if there are more than two children, then that person cannot contest local bodies. Today I had to introduce that if there are less than two children in a family, then one can’t contest local bodies."

He further said that declining population figures are becoming a reality, and there is a need to arrest the declining population.

“We are giving more money and incentives to those having more children. Sometimes, even if we give more incentives, people may not go for it, and the reason is that wealth and population are conflicting. I used to say 20 years ago,  a wife and a husband both IT professionals, decided on having no kids and said let us enjoy, but now see there is no population on earth today, it is becoming a reality…Have more children,” he added.

Notably, in 1994, Chandrababu Naidu introduced a two-child policy that barred individuals with two or more children from contesting in local body elections.

Congratulating Bihar and Uttar Pradesh over the population figures in their states, Chandrababu Naidu said, “They are saving the nation by having more children. It has to continue in other parts of the country.”
