As Jharkhand Protests Escalate, 8-Member Youth Delegation Holds Dialogue With Govt, Demands CBI Probe And Exam Cancellations

Ranchi: A critical shift occurred in the ongoing student-led agitation in Jharkhand as an eight-member student delegation left for Ranchi’s Guest House to hold formal talks with representatives of the Jharkhand government.

The movement, led primarily by the JPSC JSSC Reform Manch, has seen thousands of job aspirants, student leaders, and civil society members staging sit-ins, torch rallies, and hunger strikes across Ranchi to demand accountability and structural overhauls in state recruitment examinations.

Escalating Tensions and the Push for Dialogue

The delegation’s departure for the Ranchi Guest House marks a pivotal attempt to bridge the gap between agitating job aspirants and the Chief Minister Hemant Soren-led administration. Members of the student delegation expressed cautious optimism regarding the scheduled discussions.

"We are fully confident that the government will both listen to us and heed our words. We are a team of eight people," said one delegate before leaving for the talks. Another added: "We want Hemant Soren to alleviate our suffering. We want to initiate a productive dialogue with the government. We are hopeful that the meeting will be a success."

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who has been actively mobilising the protesters and undertaking a hunger strike, emphasised that the core grievances remain non-negotiable regardless of who represents the state at the bargaining table.

"The team has told us that we will go for a dialogue at the Circuit House at 10 am. Had the government agreed to our demands when the other students met them, then it wouldn't have been necessary for us to go as well," Mahto stated. "It doesn't matter how many of us go to meet them. All of us have the same demands, which should be fulfilled."

Core Demands of the Aspirants

The student movement has coalesced at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, which has served as the ground zero for sit-ins, torchlight processions, and hunger strikes.

1. Cancellation of 14th JPSC Preliminary Test (PT) & JSSC CGL Exams.

2. Review & termination of exam agencies under scrutiny (e.g., TDPL).

3. Independent probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) & the ED.

4. Full disclosure of category-wise cut-offs, OMR sheets, & answer keys.

5. Adoption of a standardised recruitment calendar (UPSC / SSC model).

6. Addition of a 5th option ("Not Attempted") on OMR sheets.

Protesters allege widespread irregularities, paper leaks, and lack of transparency during competitive examinations conducted over recent years. 

While state authorities initiated a Crime Investigation Department (CID) probe resulting in several arrests, student leaders argue that state-level investigations are insufficient to uncover the broader networks involved.

Political Friction and Parallel Protests

The student agitation has reverberated inside the state assembly and caught national political attention:

Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students' Association (AISA), which previously participated in protests against the NEET-UG paper leaks at Jantar Mantar, joined the job aspirants in Ranchi. AISA announced a Vidhan Sabha march to put further pressure on the state government.

The JPSC JSSC Reform Manch explicitly clarified that AISA's Vidhan Sabha march operates independently and has "nothing to do with" their official organisational platform, maintaining that their focus remains strictly on institutional reform rather than political alignment.

Opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have raised the issue in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly during the Monsoon Session, demanding a central agency probe and questioning the administration's handling of youth employment.

Government Stance and CM's Response

Addressing the growing unrest, Chief Minister Hemant Soren assured the youth that the government is taking the matter with utmost seriousness.

"Whatever is required for the youth, within the framework of the Constitution and the law, the government stands with them. They will get justice," CM Soren stated during an address. "The government is sensitive to the issue. We are looking into the matter with utmost seriousness... The investigation agency has been working day and night on this case. We are waiting for its report, its findings, and the outcome of the probe."

State cabinet ministers who held initial discussions noted that several concerns raised regarding recruitment examination processes were being evaluated thoroughly. 

However, aspirants maintain that the agitation will persist until concrete timelines and written commitments regarding exam cancellations, CBI inquiries, and transparency guidelines are officially issued.
