Mumbai: Relentless monsoon downpours and low visibility have severely disrupted aviation schedules in Maharashtra, prompting major domestic carriers, including IndiGo and Akasa Air, to issue urgent travel advisories.

According to sources, the weather has forced the cancellation of at least 17 flights and delayed another 217 operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) until 11:30 AM today.

The financial capital and surrounding regions such as Pune have been placed on high alert by the IMD.

The intense cloudburst hampered flight capacities and caused extensive bottlenecks across incoming and outgoing flight corridors.

With weather conditions showing no immediate signs of clearing, India's largest carrier, IndiGo, took to social media to alert passengers to network-wide impacts.

"Due to heavy rains, flights to/from Mumbai and Pune are impacted. We recommend checking your flight status on our website or app before heading out. Also, please allow extra time for your commute, as slow-moving traffic may affect road travel en route to the airport. Thank you for your patience and for standing by us during this time."

Other major operators, including Akasa Air and SpiceJet, have replicated similar advisories, noting that localised congestion and adverse weather could continue to affect connecting routes.

The scale of the disruption has caused immense passenger distress inside terminal gates.

Runways have caused sporadic traffic pauses over the last 24 hours due to heavy waterlogging on peripheral airport areas, strong crosswinds, and sudden drops in terminal visibility.

Beyond the terminal gates, passengers are facing significant hurdles in reaching the airport grounds.

Western Express Highway (WEH) and critical access roads leading to the international and domestic terminals are seeing severe traffic jams, with vehicles moving at a crawl due to waterlogging in several low-lying pockets of Mumbai.

Airport authorities have explicitly directed all outbound travellers to account for an additional buffer of at least one to two hours for their ground commute to prevent missing scheduled check-in times.

Ground handling and customer service desks across the terminals remain fully staffed to assist passengers looking for re-routing options or accommodation.
