Prayagraj: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has published a report on the water quality monitoring of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers during the Mahakumbh and observed that the fecal coliform levels remained mostly within safe limits, with concentrations ranging from 1200 to 2500 MPN/100 ml. The report dispels the narrative of the anti-Kumbh lobby which has been trying to defame and misinform the people on one of the biggest Sanatan gathering, taking place in Pratagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

The ideal range for fecal coliform levels is less than or equal to 2,500 MPN/100ml. The decline in these levels shows improved sewage treatment plant (STP) performance, reduced direct discharge of untreated waste, and better hygiene management at Kumbh pilgrimage sites.

The board monitored water quality at multiple locations, reporting positive trends with fecal coliform levels measured between 1,200 – 2,500 MPN/100 ml, mostly within permissible limits.

The CPCB, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), conducted regular tests at different sites in Prayagraj. The assessment focused on Dissolved Oxygen levels, Turbidity and clarity of the water.

Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels ranged between 8.5 – 10.2 mg/L, which is well above the minimum required 5 mg/L, supporting the survival of aquatic life and maintaining a marine ecosystem.

Turbidity and clarity have improved, with water transparency reaching 50 – 65 cm, making it more suitable for rituals and bathing.

Effective Measures Taken to Improve Water Quality and Manage Pollution

Despite the improvements, some locations recorded high pollution levels on specific dates. Experts attributed these spikes to increased pilgrim activity, discharge of untreated wastewater, and natural variations like rainfall and sediment transport.

However, Authorities took multiple steps to improve water quality, with 12 major Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) operating at full capacity, treating over 1,500 MLD (million liters per day) of wastewater. Geo-tube filtration technology was deployed at key bathing ghats to remove contaminants before they entered the river.

On January 13, 2025, Deeha Ghat reported fecal coliform at 33,000 MPN/100 ml, exceeding safe limits, while on January 20, 2025, Sangam recorded an extreme spike of 49,000 MPN/100 ml, indicating pollution issue at both locations.

Bioremediation techniques were implemented at sites like Sangam, Curzon Bridge, and Deeha Ghat to break down organic pollutants. Strict industrial discharge regulations resulted in a 30% reduction in chemical pollutants, further improving water quality.

Authorities strictly enforced effluent norms, resulting in a 30% reduction in industrial pollutants. Public awareness campaigns also played a key role, encouraging cleanliness and responsible bathing practices among pilgrims.

Despite some temporary concerns, the overall water quality at Mahakumbh has seen improvements, ensuring safer conditions for pilgrims.

CM Yogi Refutes Claims of Fecal Contamination at Sangam

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dismissed opposition's allegations regarding faecal contamination in the waters atTriveni Sangam, stating that continuous monitoring and purification processes ensure its quality.

CM Yogi highlighted that the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) is regularly assessing the water quality at Sangam.

"The amount of faecal coliform in Prayagraj is, as per the standards, less than 2,500 MPN per 100 ml," he said.

UP CM also criticized the opposition for trying to tarnish the Maha Kumbh, held after 144 years, pointing to comments made by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Mamata Banerjee .
