'PAN-PAN, Low Oil Quantity': Air India Pilots Issue Mid-Air Alert Before Emergency Landing In Trivandrum Shortly After Take-Off
After landing, the aircraft was declared AOG (Aircraft on Ground) for technical inspection. Airline engineers are now investigating a possible oil leak in the Engine 2.
Thiruvananthapuram: A major mid-air emergency was reported in the Air India Trivandrum to Delhi flight this morning after the pilots detected a technical issue in one of the aircraft’s engines shortly after taking off. Flight AI-830, operated by an Airbus A321 landed within minutes of its departure from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
‘PAN-PAN’ Emergency Call Issued Mid-Air
Shortly after taking off from Thiruvananthapuram, the pilots received cockpit warnings indicating low oil quantity and zero oil pressure in Engine 2. Such a condition can potentially damage the engine further if it continues operating, prompting the crew to take immediate safety action.
Following standard aviation safety procedures, the pilots shut down the affected engine while airborne and issued a ‘PAN-PAN’ urgency call, which alerts the air traffic control to a serious situation that requires priority handling but is not yet a full emergency.
Air traffic control cleared the aircraft to turn back to Trivandrum. The aircraft safely landed back at the Trivandrum airport, and all the passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. No injuries were reported.
After landing, the aircraft was declared AOG (Aircraft on Ground) for technical inspection. Airline engineers are now investigating a possible oil leak in the Engine 2.
(Further details awaited.)
