Mumbai: Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport witnessed a harrowing incident on Tuesday evening when an Air India and an IndiGo aircraft collided on the ground, with passengers on board. The incident involved Air India flight AI2732, bound for Coimbatore, and IndiGo flight 6E791, arriving from Hyderabad.
According to reports, the right wing tips of both aircraft touched each other while they were taxiing. The Air India plane was pushing back for departure, while the IndiGo flight was taxiing after landing. Both aircraft returned to the bay for inspections, and officers from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have reached the site.
As per reports, no injuries have been reported, and all passengers were safely disembarked. The DGCA has launched an investigation into the incident, asking both airlines to submit their reports.
Air India has stated that the wingtips of the two aircraft made contact, resulting in damage to the aircraft's wingtip. IndiGo has also confirmed the incident, saying the aircraft is undergoing maintenance inspection.
The collision incident has stirred concerns about flight operations protocols at Mumbai Airport, one of India's busiest aviation hubs. The DGCA will investigate the cause of the collision and take necessary actions.
“Ground incident involving Air India and IndiGo A320 aircraft at Mumbai Airport. An incident involving two A320 aircraft occurred during ground movement on 3 Feb 2026 at Mumbai Airport. Air India flight A12732 (aircraft registration VT-TYF) was taxying from C1 towards M4 for departure, whilst an IndiGo A320 (aircraft registration VT-IFV) was taxying on arrival and joining B1. During taxiing, the right wing tips of both aircraft touched each other. Both aircraft returned to their respective bays for inspection. DGCA officers from the Mumbai office have reached the site,” DGCA, in a statement, stated.
According to reports, a prominent aviation journalist reported the incident on X, expressing concern following the collision at the airport. "Serious safety concern at @CSMIA_Official Mumbai Airport yesterday putting 100s of life at risk" the foreign journalist tweeted.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident, asking both airlines to submit their reports. According to sources, the Air India aircraft was pushing back for takeoff when the IndiGo plane, which had just landed, collided with it.
In a statement, an IndiGo spokesperson said, “On February 3, 2026, IndiGo flight 6E791 from Hyderabad was taxiing after landing when the incident occurred. We are working with the authorities to understand the circumstances.”
Air India spokesperson issued a statement, following the collision incident, saying, “Flight AI2732 operating from Mumbai to Coimbatore on 3 February was delayed after the aircraft scheduled to operate the service came into contact with another airline’s aircraft while waiting on the taxiway prior to take-off. The wingtips of the two aircraft made contact, resulting in damage to our aircraft’s wingtip. As a precautionary measure, the aircraft has been grounded for further technical checks. All passengers were safely disembarked, and our ground teams are making alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination at the earliest. The incident has been reported to the regulator. Air India regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers due to this event. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority.”
The Mumbai airport, one of India's busiest aviation hubs, handles hundreds of aircraft movements daily across its two intersecting runways. However, the incident has led to growing concerns about safety protocols and air traffic management at the airport.
