Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a memorable appearance at the 'Jhumoir Binandini' event, held at Sarusajai Stadium in Assam's Guwahati, where he enthusiastically beat a traditional drum, captivating the audience. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied him at the event on Monday, which celebrated a major milestone – the 200th anniversary of Assam's tea industry. The grand cultural event showcased the rich heritage of Assam's tea garden workers and Adivasi community.
The Jhumoir dance, which dates back to the early 19th century, originated as a means for tea plantation workers to express joy and unity after a long day of labour. Over time, it has become a symbol of Assam's vibrant tea community and its cultural identity.
Celebration Of 200 Years Of Assam's Tea Industry
The event was a spectacular showcase of Assam's rich cultural heritage, featuring a mesmerising performance by 8,600 dancers, including artists from the Assam Tea Tribe and Adivasi communities. The dancers performed the traditional Jhumur folk dance, which is an integral part of the Sadan ethnolinguistic group's cultural identity. A light and music show also added to the spectacle. The 'Jhumoir Binandini' (Mega Jhumoir) 2025 marked a historic occasion, celebrating 200 years of Assam's tea industry and industrialisation.
PM Modi's participation in the event was a testament to his commitment to promoting India's diverse cultural traditions. His presence was warmly welcomed by the audience, who were thrilled to see the Prime Minister beat the traditional drum with such enthusiasm.
PM Modi's Appreciation For Assam's Rich Culture
Prime Minister Modi, accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, appreciated the local artists and their performance, acknowledging the deep cultural significance of Jhumoir. "I want to thank the government of Assam for organizing this programme," PM Modi said while addressing the gathering. CM Sarma welcomed PM Modi at the airport in Guwahati, posting on X, "It is a privilege and honor to welcome the world's most popular leader, PM Narendra Modi, to Assam. His vision drives us in our pursuit to build a Viksit Assam." At the event, CM Sarma also presented the Prime Minister with gifts showcasing the state's rich traditions. PM Modi is currently on a two-day visit to Assam and is set to inaugurate Advantage Assam 2.0 on Tuesday.
Following the event, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video of PM Modi beating a traditional drum on his X handle, saying, “Adarniya (Respected) Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji playing the 'Dhomsa', a traditional drum played by our sisters and brothers from the tea garden community. Isn't it amazing?”
