The medical community is mourning the loss of celebrated nephrologist and urologist. The 77-year-old surgeon, known for his remarkable achievements in the field of nephrology, left behind a suicide note citing his declining health as the reason for his tragic decision.
Dr Abraham was a trailblazer in his field, with a career spanning over four decades. He headed the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant at a premier private hospital in Kochi and was renowned for performing over 2,500 kidney transplants. His achievements include Kerala 's first cadaver transplant and being the third surgeon worldwide to conduct a living donor laparoscopic renal transplant. Dr Abraham's contributions to the field of nephrology earned him the prestigious ‘Bhartiya Chikitsa Ratna’ award.
Tributes and Investigation
Tributes have poured in from the medical community, with Chennai-based doctor Dr Jaison Philip describing Dr Abraham as a "light" in Indian urology. Dr Arun Kumar Balakrishnan, Managing Director of the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Chennai, remembered Dr Abraham as a "thorough gentleman" and a "great teacher, surgeon, and pioneer" in the field of laparoscopic urology. The police investigation into Dr Abraham's death has found no foul play, with the cause of death attributed to depression linked to a recent disease diagnosis and old age. His funeral was scheduled for Monday afternoon at St George Jacobite Syrian Church, Cheruthottukunnel.

Dr Abraham, who was affiliated with a well-known private hospital in Kochi and had personally performed over 2,500 renal transplant surgeries, set new standards for surgical practices. Dr Abraham was also the third surgeon globally to perform a living donor laparoscopic renal transplant and had made major strides in Kerala, where he performed the first cadaver transplant, as well as the first Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and 3D laparoscopy for lap donor nephrectomy.
