Kolkata: The mother of the RG Kar doctor, who was raped and murdered, has requested a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek justice for her daughter on Saturday.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the grieving mother raised concerns about the safety and security of women in West Bengal.

She further expressed her desire to meet with the Prime Minister to intervene in the matter.

"I would like to meet the PM and appeal to him to intervene in this matter and consider our plea for justice for our deceased daughter," she said.

The mother of the deceased doctor stated that she never imagined her daughter would meet such a tragic fate. She further questioned why, after seven months since the horrific incident, justice has not been served.

"Our daughter had big dreams, and we never imagined that she would have to die in such a way. It’s been seven months since she left us, but where is the justice? We don’t even have the death certificate," she claimed.

"If a woman doctor is unsafe at her workplace, then where is the security?" she questioned.

In response to the mother's request, PM Modi’s ally and BJP MLA, Agnimitra Paul, assured that the Prime Minister would listen to the parents' appeal. "There is a process to seek an appointment with the PM, and I am sure our Prime Minister will give them (the parents) some time and listen to their appeal," she said.

However, Trinamool Congress leader and state Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya played a political card, stating that anyone can seek an appointment with the Prime Minister. She added, "But we must not forget that it was our leader, Mamata Banerjee, who took the first step, leading to the arrest of the culprit, Sanjoy Roy. Even the probe agency could not differ from their findings."

Sanjoy Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer and the convict in the rape-and-murder case, was sentenced to life imprisonment until death on January 20.

Both the CBI and the state government had filed appeals before the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy.

On February 7, the Calcutta High Court refused to admit the state government’s appeal, challenging the trial court’s life term sentence, but accepted the similar plea from the central probe agency.
