Indian Air Force scientist and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla has given a glimpse into everyday life aboard a space station, explaining the surprising adaptations required for even basic hygiene routines like shaving.

In a post on X, Shukla shared a video demonstrating the process and noted that hygiene activities take on a life of their own in microgravity. Some change dramatically, while others shift only subtly -- yet still require adjustment because nothing behaves the same without gravity.

Shaving, he said, is among the simpler routines. Astronauts do not wash their faces the way people do on Earth. Instead, they squeeze a small amount of water directly onto the skin, where surface tension causes it to cling rather than fall away.

“Yes, really. Watch it for yourself,” he wrote, referring to the accompanying video.

Beyond appearance, Shukla highlighted a practical reason for keeping facial hair under control: it can interfere with the seal of an emergency mask, which is especially critical during travel to and from the station.

“Space doesn’t really care about your personal style,” he said. “But somehow, it does make everything look a little cooler,” he added.

The post underscores how the absence of gravity turns ordinary tasks into carefully managed procedures while still capturing a sense of wonder about life beyond Earth.
