Lucknow: In a stern address to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, Speaker Satish Mahana reprimanded MLAs after receiving reports of a member spitting ‘pan masala' in the Vidhan Sabha hall. Mahana, who personally oversaw the cleaning of the area after he was informed, stressed the importance of maintaining a clean and respectful environment within the assembly. However, he chose not to publicly name the offending MLA, instead urging them to come forward and take responsibility for their actions.
Mahana also explained in the Assembly hall, the importance of upholding the dignity and cleanliness of the Vidhan Sabha. The Speaker, by taking immediate action and ensuring the cleaning of the area himself, set a strong example for his fellow lawmakers. His message was clear in the Vidhan Sabha, which is maintaining a clean and respectful environment is the responsibility of every MLA. As Mahana stated, "Keeping this Assembly clean is our responsibility. If the MLA in question comes and tells me that they have done this, it will be good, otherwise, I will call them."
A video of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly speaker, schooling the MLAs responsible for not maintaining the dignity of the Vidhan Sabha and spitting pan masala in the Assembly hall is also going viral on the social media. In the video, Mahana can be heard saying, "This morning I received information that in this hall of our Vidhan Sabha, some Member has spit after consuming pan masala. So, I came here and got it cleaned. I have seen the MLA in the video. But I do not want to humiliate any individual. So, I am not taking their name. I urge all Members that if they see anyone doing this, they should stop them. Keeping this Assembly clean is our responsibility. If the MLA in question comes and tells me that they have done this, it will be good; otherwise, I will call them."

Uttar Pradesh's Budget
Amidst the ongoing assembly session in Uttar Pradesh, State Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna presented the state budget for 2025-26 on February 20. The budget, which totals over Rs 8,08,736 crore, represents a 9.8% increase from the previous year's budget. According to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the budget focuses on infrastructure development and reflects the state's growing strength and commitment to progress.
Pertinently, the state's economic growth has been notable, with Uttar Pradesh rising from the 6th-7th largest economy in India to the second-largest. As underlined by CM Yogi, the state's physical health index increased by 8.9% between 2018 and 2022, and unemployment rates decreased while additional jobs were created.
