Actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy has failed to prove his majority to form a government in Tamil Nadu for the third straight time. According to sources, Vijay has failed to secure the majority mark of 118 MLAs and is still short of 2 MLAs.
Chennai: In a huge development in the political thriller ongoing in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy has failed to prove his majority to form a government in the state for the third straight time. According to sources, Vijay has failed to secure the majority mark of 118 MLAs and is still short of 2 MLAs.
This comes after he met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar today for the third time in three days and staked claim to form the government in the state.
How Did Vijay Fail To Prove Majority?
Earlier it was reported that Vijay has the support of 120 MLAs, two more than the magic number needed to form the government. Celebrations had begun outside the office of Vijay's Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), with supporters dancing and bursting firecrackers. Some Left leaders also said that Vijay was set to take oath as the Chief Minister tomorrow (Saturday). However, Vijay suffered a huge blow as some allies withdrew their much-needed support.
IUML Withdraws Support
Vijay met with a shocking twist as Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) refused to back his bid to form the government.
VCK Likely To Back Out
It is also reported that Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has backed out from supporting Vijay. In a shocking development, VCK leaders are now set to meet DMK leader and outgoing CM MK Stalin.
The meeting could bring another twist in the political drama in Tamil Nadu.
Interestingly, VCK had asked Vijay for the Deputy Chief Minister's post as a condition for extending support to TVK. The party wanted two ministerial posts. Further, it was also reported that VCK wanted its chief Thol Thirumavalavan to fight elections from Tiruchirappalli East.
Notably, Tiruchirappalli East seat was won by Vijay in the recently-concluded elections. Since he also clinched victory from Perambur, he will have to resign from one seat, that will undergo fresh polls.
The Number Game
With the departure of VCK and IUML, Vijay lost the support of 4 MLAs and his numbers dropped to 116 MLAs.
Here is a breakdown of the number of seats contributed by each party:
- Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) - 107 seats
- Communist Party of India (CPI) - 2 seats
- Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI (M) - 2 seats
- Congress - 5 seats
TVK's Blockbuster Performance
Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by Vijay in February 2024, made a historic debut in the April 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, shaking up the state's traditional political landscape.
TVK swept the elections, winning 108 seats out of the 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The party emerged as the single-largest party in the elections, breaking the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) parties in the state.
