Jabalpur: A video taken minutes before a cruise boat capsized in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, showed the victims enjoying the ride, unaware of their tragic fate. The boat, which was carrying 43 people, sank in the Narmada River's Bargi Dam area on Thursday evening.

Tourists on the deck were seen laughing and enjoying the strong, cool winds, minutes before a sudden storm turned the joyful ride into a nightmare. The impact of the store overturned the vessel, killing nine people and leaving six others missing.

The video of their last moments is believed to have been recorded by one of the passengers. Several kids were also seen on the boat with their families.

Notably, the video highlighted that the wind was visibly strong during the time, with choppy water in the background and passengers' clothes and hair blowing vigorously. Yet no one on board was seen wearing a life jacket.

As the boat started to sink, panic erupted among the passengers. A video showed a man frantically distributing life jackets amongst people as they desperately tried to keep themselves alive.

Rescue operations are ongoing in Naramada River as six people who were on board are still missing. Indian Army diving teams, inducted overnight from Agra, have joined the operation on site. 

Tragic Pic Of Mother-Child Locked In Final Hug

A tragic picture from the scene showed the deceased bodies of a woman and her four-year-old child locked in a tight embrace. The woman, who was from Delhi, had tightly wrapped her arms around her son in a final, desperate act to protect her child. The duo were wrapped in a life jacket.

Her husband and daughter survived the accident.

‘Boat Was Shaking, People Jumped Off’

An eyewitness named Tuhin told ANI that the boat was shaing amidst strong winds. He claimed that people told the boat operator to pull the boat to our side and anchor it, but he paid no heed. “He took the boat in the middle of the water once again and it capsized,” Tuhin added.

Samrat, another eyewitness, said, “It was really windy. We told the boat operator to come to the other end, but he paid no heed. It started for the other side but capsized in the middle of the dam. A few people in life jackets jumped off the boat…We safely rescued about 15-16 people…We rushed them to the hospital. The bodies were taken away.”

‘Was Stuck In Water For 5 Hours’: Survivor

One of the man who survived the tragedy revealed that he was stuck in the water for four to five hours.

“I was stuck over the boat... I was stuck amid water for 4-5 hours and could here no sound...Three members of my family had already drowned and I could have drowned as well, but miraculously, I was saved," Syed Hussain said.

PM Modi Condoles Death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the lives lost in the “extremely painful” tragedy. In a post on X, the PM wrote, “The loss of lives due to the capsizing of a boat in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, is extremely painful. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this tragic mishap. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (MNRF) would be given to the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives. Further, the injured would be given Rs. 50,000.
