Vadodara: In a tragic road accident, a woman was killed and several others sustained injuries when a speeding car driven by a 20-year-old law student rammed into their two-wheelers in Gujarat ’s Vadodara city in the early hours of Friday. 

The accused driver identified as Rakshit Chaurasiya has been apprehended. 

What We Know So Far in Vadodara Road Accident 

Police said the accused was intoxicated as per the witnesses account. 

However, the driver has refuted the claims, stating that the deployment of the airbags caused him to lose control of the vehicle. 

"I was driving my friend's car. My front view got blocked when the airbags were deployed  after the car made slight contact with the scooter. I wasn't intoxicated,” the accused driver said.

When asked about the words he shouted following the incident, the accused said, "I was screaming like that to ensure people stayed away from me." 

How Did The Accident Happen?

According to the CCTV footage accessed, the speeding car can be seen crashing into two scooters, knocking down the riders and dragging them along before coming to a halt.

“Primarily, the car was over speeding. This can also be a case of drunk driving. We will conduct his medical test to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol,” said a police official. 

The deceased has been identified as Hemali Patel, who was riding her scooter at the time of the accident. The accident occurred around 12.30 am near Muktanand cross roads in the Karelibaug area.

Accused Shouted ‘Another Round, Another Round’

Unfazed by the incident, the accused came out of the car and started shouting ‘Another Round, Another Round’. His friend Mit Chauhan, who was sitting beside him said he in no way is responsible for the incident and it's the driver's fault.

Following the incident, the bystanders nearby thrashed the accused, however, a section of crowd tried to save him so that accused can be handed over to the police accordingly.

Police said that accused driver is a law student and lives in a PG accommodation in the city. 

An FIR has been registered against the accused, police said.
