New Airport, Same Problem? Waterlogging at Noida Airport Triggers Online Storm and Political Debate | WATCH

Noida: A heavy spell of downpour in Gautam Buddha Nagar caused temporary waterlogging at the newly operational Noida International Airport in Jewar, sparking a fierce debate online over urban infrastructure, drainage design, and the nature of social media outrage.

Visuals circulating across social media platforms showed rainwater accumulating in the passage and underpass connecting the main terminal building to the parking zone.

Passengers were seen wading through pooled water while airport personnel deployed dewatering pumps to clear the area.

The incident quickly ignited a broader commentary on how civic issues are treated across Indian cities.

Observers and social media commentators pointed out the sharp contrast in online discourse, noting that if a similar scene had occurred at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, social media algorithms and digital commentary would have swiftly labelled it a "national disaster." 

Critics noted that public outrage and viral traction often depend heavily on pincodes, city branding, and which metro area happens to be trending at any given moment. Nevertheless, the viral footage provided ample fuel for political opponents.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav posted a video of the waterlogged passage, questioning the quality of infrastructure built under the ruling government and taking a sarcastic dig at the administration.

Other social media users poked fun at the airport's aesthetic design, which draws inspiration from the Varanasi Ghats, joking that the flooded underpass had turned into an actual riverfront.

Responding to the criticism, the Noida International Airport (NIA) management issued a statement clarifying that flight operations and overall airport functioning remained completely unaffected.

Authorities attributed the accumulation to an unusually intense spell of heavy rainfall over a short duration.

According to officials, quick-response teams managed to drain the water within 30 minutes, rerouting passenger movement via alternative kerbside access points in the interim to minimise inconvenience.

Built at an estimated cost of over Rs 11,000 crore as a major aviation hub for the Delhi-NCR region, the greenfield airport's management assured the public that engineering teams are reviewing the drainage setup to prevent recurring issues during subsequent monsoon spells.
