Bengal Post-Poll Tensions: RSS Worker Suffers Skull Injury In Brutal Attack, House Vandalised In Behala
In a significant incident late Wednesday evening, the residence of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker Abhijit Brahma was allegedly targeted and vandalised by a group of individuals identified by locals as supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Kolkata: Tensions flared in the Behala neighbourhood of West Bengal following the conclusion of voting, as allegations surfaced of a violent assault on local Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) members.
The incident, which reportedly took place late Wednesday evening, saw the residence of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker Abhijit Brahma was allegedly targeted and vandalised by a group of individuals identified by locals as supporters of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on late Wednesday evening.
According to local reports, a group described as Trinamool miscreants descended upon the home of Abhijit Brahma shortly after the electoral process ended.
The mob allegedly forced their way into the premises, causing significant damage to property and creating an atmosphere of chaos.
Targeted Assault on Brothers
Witnesses reported that a mob gathered outside Brahma's residence, shouting slogans before forcibly entering the premises.
The attackers allegedly pelted stones, shattered windowpanes, and damaged household property. Abhijit Brahma and his brother, Prasenjit Brahma, both active members of the RSS, were reportedly physically assaulted during the confrontation.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers used blunt objects and pelted stones, leading to a situation that drew neighbours out of their homes.
Abhijit Brahma, known for his active role in the RSS and local community organisation, claimed that the assault was a pre-planned attempt to intimidate those who supported the opposition during the voting process.
Political Counter-Allegations
The incident has triggered a war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which maintains close ties with the RSS, and the ruling TMC.
BJP leadership in the state condemned the attack, calling it a testament to the crumbling law-and-order situation under the current administration.
They have demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and 24-hour police protection for Brahma’s family.
In a move that has sparked outrage and political debate, the Kolkata Police responded to the scene but subsequently placed the victim, Abhijit Brahma, under arrest.
While the specific charges leading to his detention have not been fully detailed, the move has been heavily criticised by opposition leaders who claim the police are acting under the influence of the ruling party.
The arrest has led to accusations of double standards in law enforcement, with critics arguing that the victims of the violence are being penalised, while the actual perpetrators remain at large.
As the situation remains volatile, a heavy police presence has been maintained in Behala to prevent retaliatory clashes.
The RSS has called for a thorough investigation and the immediate release of Abhijit Brahma, citing the incident as a grave violation of democratic norms.
