New Delhi: The foreign ministry on Thursday said it will take "appropriate action" after an old video of US President Donald Trump making unusual comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s career recently resurfaced on social media.

The footage in question is from an October 2025 press conference, where President Trump where Trump made the remark on a light note saying, “Modi is a great man. He loves Trump. I don't know if the word love, I don't want you to take that any different. I don't want to destroy his political career.”

MEA to take 'appropriate action'

As the clip continues to circulate on social media, gaining fresh traction following last week's historic India-US trade deal, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the matter during Thursday's weekly briefing.

While Jaiswal noted he had not personally viewed the footage, he clarified that the government would take 'appropriate action' if such a video exists.

"I have not seen the video... However, if such a video exists, whether it is true or false, we will take appropriate action on it," Jaiswal said in tough remarks.

The spokesperson’s remarks come as New Delhi and Washington navigate the final details of their new reciprocal trade framework.

Trump on Russian Oil claims

US President made these comments on October 15, 2025, offering lavish praise for PM Modi after claiming that India had committed to halting all oil purchases from Russia.

In typical fashion, Trump spoke of a major breakthrough, despite the fact that New Delhi had not issued any such concrete assurance.

Praising PM Modi as a "great man" and a time-tested leader, Trump then stressed that PM Modi "loves Trump".

The U.S. President then appeared to pause and reflect on his wording, feeling the need to provide an immediate clarification.

Trump emphasized that his use of the word 'love' should not be misinterpreted, jokingly adding that he 'doesn’t want to destroy the political career' of Prime Minister Modi by suggesting a connection that might be seen as too intimate.

"Modi is a great man. He loves Trump... I don't want you to take the word love any differently. I don't want to destroy his political career," Trump chuckled in his own inimitable style.

While a segment of social media users interpreted the remarks as a subtle threat toward Prime Minister Modi, they were, in reality, delivered in a humorous and lighthearted manner.

Feedback from Sergio Gor

During the same press briefing, Trump recounted feedback from Sergio Gor, following his return from meetings in New Delhi.

'He loves Trump,' the President remarked, referring to himself in the third person. He then joked about his choice of words, quipping, ‘I don’t want you to take the word love any differently... I don’t want to destroy his political career.’
