Woman Gets 11-year in Prison for Killing her Alleged Sex Trafficker

KENOSHA Wisconsin: A 24-year-old woman from Wisconsin has been sentenced to 11 years in jail for killing a man she claimed had sexually trafficked and abused her as a teenager. 

Chrystul Kizer was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree reckless homicide. In addition to the prison term, Kizer will serve five years on parole. She was also asked to submit her DNA sample to authorities and is required to attend a restitution hearing at a later date.

Woman Shot Alleged Sex Traffic, Stole his BMW Car

The case revolves around the 2018 killing of 34-year-old Randall Volar, whom Kizer shot in the head at his home in Kenosha, Wisconsin, when she was 17 years old. After the shooting, Kizer set fire to Volar’s home and stole his BMW to flee the scene. Initially, she faced a range of charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, arson, car theft, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Kizer met Volar when she was 16 years old on a sex trafficking website, she said he had been molesting her and exploiting her as a prostitute for the year before his death. At the time of Volar’s death, the Kenosha County District Attorney confirmed that they had an open investigation against him in a case. Despite this, prosecutors said that Kizer did not mentioned she had been trafficked by Volar when the killing first came to light.

In a 2019 interview with a global media outlet, Kizer recounted the events leading up to the killing. She said she visited Volar’s house with a gun given to her by her boyfriend for protection. Once there, Volar allegedly gave her drugs, and they started watching a movie together. Kizer said, Volar began touching her inappropriately, leading to a confrontation when she refused to have sex with him. She claimed that Volar pinned her down, at which point she shot him twice.

Killed Him in Self-Defence 

After killing him, Kizer set Volar’s body on fire and drove off in his car. She later said that she was trying to escape the abusive situation she found herself in.

Kenosha District Attorney Michael D. Graveley argued that the killing was premeditated, alleging that Kizer planned to steal Volar’s BMW. However, Kizer’s defense had a victory in 2022 when the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that she could use a state law that allows victims of trafficking to argue an "affirmative defense" for any crime committed as a direct result of being trafficked.

Earlier this year, Kizer was released from prison on a $400,000 bond but violated her bail conditions by fleeing the state. She was apprehended two weeks later in Louisiana and returned to Wisconsin, where she has now been formally sentenced.
