Bengaluru: Good news for Namma Metro riders as Bengaluru's long-awaited Metro Yellow Line, connecting RV College Road to Bommasandra and linking the south Bengaluru tech hub Electronics City, is to be operational soon.
Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line
The Yellow Line spans 19.1 km and is expected to significantly improve connectivity in the city. However, the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has faced challenges, including a shortage of rolling stock, which has contributed to delays in the project's completion. According to reports, BMRCL plans to start operations with three trains running at a 30-minute frequency, with hopes of receiving additional trains by April to enhance services.
Yellow Line Trial Run
Trial runs for the Yellow Line began happened on March 7, 2025. AM Chowdhary, Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (South Circle), inspected two CRRC Nanjing Puzhen trains—one imported from China and the other assembled in India by Titagarh Rail Systems.
Bengaluru Metro Pink Line
Work on the Namma Metro pink line stretch is also in full swing to connect the suburbs of Bengaluru. The 7.5 km elevated section of the Pink Line, stretching from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere, is expected to be operational by December 2025. The 13.7 km underground segment of the Pink Line is anticipated to open by December 2026.
Challenges and Delays
Originally, the Yellow Line was slated to begin operations in December 2021, but the delays in coach delivery kept the work in progress for so long. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent trade restrictions further hindered progress. To overcome these challenges, CRRC partnered with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail to fulfil local production requirements and supply the demanded coaches.
Future Developments
The launch of the Yellow Line and the upcoming Pink Line operations are expected to bring drastic changes in Bengaluru's public transportation infrastructure, easing traffic congestion and providing a reliable and efficient mode of transport for the city's residents.
Bengaluru's metro is one of the most sought-after and second-longest city metro projects in the country. As the city eagerly awaits the commencement of the Yellow Line operations, the Bengaluru Metro continues to work towards enhancing connectivity and improving the overall commuting experience for its citizens.
