The monsoon season has unleashed its fury on most parts of the country. The constant downpour has disrupted most lives. With commutes taking longer and moisture gripping the air, workouts are likely to take a toll, too. While most gym and exercise places are air-conditioned, the trip to the location might be tricky because of waterlogging and rain. The excess humidity and moisture can also be dampening to the spirit. Clothes take longer to dry, pathways are slippery, and the temptation to stay at home and curl up with a favourite snack is at an all-time high. However, with a few simple adjustments, you can stay fit and healthy throughout the season.
Indoor workouts
If your morning walk or run is getting cancelled frequently, replace it with a 20–30 minute indoor routine. Bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups, planks and jumping jacks can provide an effective full-body workout without any equipment. Consistency matters more than duration, especially during unpredictable weather.
Shift focus to diet
As per ANI, a balanced diet plays a crucial role in supporting overall health during the monsoon. Include seasonal fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and foods rich in vitamins C and D. Stay hydrated even if you feel less thirsty, and limit the intake of fried or street foods.
Hydration
Many people drink less water during the rainy season because they do not feel as thirsty. Yet humidity can still cause significant fluid loss through sweat. Keep a water bottle nearby and include electrolytes if you are doing intense workouts.
Change the workout regime
Exercising in humid weather can feel more tiring than usual. On days when outdoor activity is not possible, try low-impact cardio such as marching in place, step-ups on a sturdy platform, dancing, or stationary cycling. These options help maintain stamina without putting excessive strain on the body.
Protect your feet
Wet shoes and socks can lead to fungal infections and discomfort. If you must step out for a workout, choose shoes with a good grip and dry them thoroughly afterwards. Keep an extra pair of socks in your gym bag.
Focus on recovery and hygiene
The humid weather can increase fatigue and the likelihood of infections. Ensure adequate sleep, stretch before and after workouts, and maintain good personal hygiene. Shower promptly after exercising, keep your workout gear clean, and wash your hands regularly to minimise exposure to germs.
