Rare Blood Moon to Light Up the Sky This Week: Know Date, Time, and Viewing Tips
On March 13-14, 2025, a Blood Moon will captivate skywatchers in North and South America, Europe, and Africa.
A rare Blood Moon will be visible across various parts of the world during the total lunar eclipse on March 13-14, 2025. The event will coincide with the vibrant celebration of Holi , offering a spectacular view of the reddish or orange-colored Moon. This celestial spectacle is expected to be a once-in-a-year event that will captivate skywatchers worldwide.
When and Where to Watch the Blood Moon
The total lunar eclipse, which will last for about 65 minutes, will be visible from areas in North America, South America, Western Europe, and Western Africa. Major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Madrid will offer the best vantage points for this stunning phenomenon.
During this event, the Moon will appear smaller than usual because of its distance from Earth, a phenomenon called the MicroMoon.
What is a Blood Moon?
A Blood Moon occurs when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow onto the Moon’s surface. The dramatic red or orange hue is caused by Rayleigh scattering, where shorter wavelengths of blue and violet light are scattered by the Earth’s atmosphere, allowing only red light to reach the Moon.
This event will be the third type of lunar eclipse:
Penumbral lunar eclipse: The Moon passes through Earth’s outer shadow, resulting in a subtle dimming.
Partial lunar eclipse: The Moon partially enters Earth’s inner shadow, creating a darker section.
Total lunar eclipse (Blood Moon): The entire Moon enters the Earth’s shadow and turns red.
Will the Blood Moon Be Visible in India?
Unfortunately, India will miss the Blood Moon this time, as the eclipse will take place during daylight hours there. However, this rare event will still be of great interest to astronomers worldwide, especially given its timing during the Holi celebrations. The combination of a cosmic event and a cultural festival adds a unique touch to this already extraordinary phenomenon.
Viewing Tips for the Blood Moon
Watching a lunar eclipse is safe to do with the naked eye, unlike a solar eclipse. However, to get the best experience, here are some tips:
Find a dark spot away from city lights for the clearest view.
Check the weather to ensure clear skies.
Use binoculars or a telescope for a closer look at the Moon’s surface during the eclipse.
Take long-exposure photos to capture the stunning colors and patterns of the eclipse.
