Team India starts on a positive note
While the stains of the World Cup final loss might still be afresh, the next assignment has been flagged off. Just four days after completing the exhaustive ICC ODI World Cup 2023 campaign, Team India was in action again and it was the fresh crop that was in focus. In the first outing, Generation W exhibited fearless cricket and got the job done in the most splendid way possible.
Yashasvi Jaiswal made his intent clear from the first ball itself and stayed for an eventful 8-ball 21 runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad unfortunately got run out on a diamond duck. The weight of losing two early wickets did not seem to put any pressure on Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, as they took on the bowling and kept on dispatching the ball in the crowd. Kishan smashed 5 sixes and 2 fours in his innings of 58 runs, and Surya on the other hand gave no respite to the Aussies and scored 80 off 42 balls. In the end, it was the crucial 22 off 14 by Rinku Singh that got India past the line.

Ishan Kishan reflects on his performance after the match
Ishan Kishan was in the World Cup squad but had to make way for Shubman Gill after the initial two matches. He then stayed on the sidelines throughout the tournament and played a different role for the team. Following the culmination of the World Cup, Kishan has been brought back into the playing XI, and straightaway he has fired on all cylinders.
"During the World Cup, when I wasn't playing, I asked myself before every practice session 'What is important for me now? What I could do?' I practised a lot in nets. I was co instantly talking to the coaches about the game, how to take the game deep. How to target certain bowlers. Being a lefty against leg-spinner, I know how the wicket was as I had kept for 20 overs. When you are chasing 209, you need to target a bowler, who you can hit. The communication was very important in the middle. I had a chat with Surya bhai. 'I'm gonna take this guy (down) wherever he bowls' because we needed the close the gap between runs and balls. You can't leave too many runs for the batters at the back. It won't be easy for them to play the big shots straight away. I had to take my chances and I believed in myself," he said.
After the match, Kishan reflected on the partnership with Surya in the 1st T20, and said it was crucial in the context of the game. Kishan highlighted the coordination that the two have garnered while playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and hence everything panned out well.
"A partnership was very important as we had lost two early wickets. I've played with Surya bhai. We are in the same IPL team so I know how he bats. We were constantly communicating about which bowler to target or how we are going to rotate the strike. The way we executed our plans in the middle... That was the time when I thought we are in the game," he added.
