Australia have put one step more forward to make it to the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup after defeating England by 33 runs in their CWC 2023 clash. The Aussies won their fifth consecutive match of the tournament whereas England were handed their fifth successive loss. After the loss, the defending champions are officially ruled out of the CWC 2023

Australia register fifth successive CWC 2023 win 

Batting first, Australia didn't start well as they lost openers David Warner and Travis Head for a score of 38 runs. Warner scored 15 runs off 16 balls whereas Head departed for 11 runs. The team was taken out of trouble by Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, as the duo added 75 runs off 96 balls for the third wicket. Smith was dismissed by Adil Rashid for 44 runs. However, after Smith's departure, Labuschagne hit a half-century and played an innings of 71 runs off 83 balls. His knock consisted of seven fours. Cameron Green (47) and Marcus Stoinis (35) gave the much-needed finish to the Australian team and they ended their first innings at 286 runs. England pacer Chris Woakes picked up four wickets whereas Adil Rashid and Mark Wood also chipped in with two wickets each.

Chasing the target, England lost opener Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings to Australian pacer Mitchell Starc. The Aussies struck again and dismissed Joe Root for 13 runs. However, opener Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes took the team out of trouble and put up an 84-run stand for the third wicket. Malan walked back after scoring 50 runs whereas Stokes also departed after playing an innings of 64 runs. No other batter was able to stay at the crease for long after the departure of Stokes and England was bundled for 253 runs. England are officially eliminated from the CWC 2023.
