Football transfer rumours: Man United keen on signing Lyon's Dembele

Lyon striker Moussa Dembele is reportedly keen on a return to England after a significant amount of interest has been shown from Manchester United, according to latest British media reports. The Frenchman came through Fulham’s academy and attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs before a surprising move to Celtic. Dembele spent a goal-laden two years at Parkhead before an acrimonious exit to Lyon in 2018, where he has scored 26 goals in 56 matches for the Ligue 1 giants. The 23-year-old has been of considerable interest to United for a long period of time and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is particularly keen on him all the more now, given the club’s current problems in front of the goal.

United has now begun to accept that the squad requires a major overhaul, with the club targeting two strikers, two central midfielders, a central defender and a left-back. The youngster has attracted critics in France after joining the club from Scottish champions Celtic in August 2018 on a five-year deal.

Ole aims to bolster United's attack

Dembele scored 20 goals for Lyon in all competitions last season to help the club finish third in the table and make it to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Manchester United look to revamp their side after the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan prior to the start of the ongoing season. Ole did not consider it necessary to replace the strikers and rather relied on young guns like Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. However, with the club’s bad form in the Premier League, Ole would be willing to spend big in the summer of 2020.

At 23, Dembele would fancy a return to England, especially at a top club like United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a big fan of his and wants a striker in January 2020. Even as Lyon spent €22 million on Dembele just over a year ago and have declared him not for sale.
