The Russia number five seed looked to be cruising after taking the first set 6-3 with ease, but his Spanish opponents put up stiffer resistance in the second and it was only in the 11th game that Medvedev managed to break through.
There was no time for Davidovich Fokin to respond and Medvedev completed a 6-3 7-5 victory in an hour and 45 minutes.
