Amazon, an e-commerce giant, is undergoing restructuring in its Alexa division, cutting hundreds of jobs to redirect resources towards artificial intelligence (AI). In a communication to employees on Friday, Daniel Rausch, Amazon's Vice President of Alexa and Fire TV, announced the elimination of certain roles due to the abandonment of specific initiatives.

Rausch stated that Amazon is realigning its efforts to better match business priorities and address customer needs, particularly emphasising a focus on generative AI. While the exact number of job cuts was not specified, Rausch confirmed that several hundred positions would be affected.

The move comes as Amazon intensifies its competition in the rapidly evolving field of generative AI. Over the past few months, the company has implemented various AI initiatives, incorporating the technology into customer reviews and providing services for developers to build their own AI tools on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. In September, Amazon unveiled an updated version of Alexa, enhancing it with additional generative AI features.

The job cuts will impact employees in the United States, Canada, and India. This follows recent layoffs in Amazon's gaming and music teams, adding to the 27,000 employees the company let go during the latter part of the previous year and earlier this year. It's noteworthy that Amazon's Alexa unit was also affected by those previous rounds of layoffs.

This strategic realignment reflects Amazon's commitment to staying at the forefront of AI innovation, aligning its workforce with evolving business priorities and market demands.
