ChatGPT-maker OpenAI fires Sam Altman as CEO, board says it lost confidence

Sam Altman, the CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, the company that invented ChatGPT, has unexpectedly left the company and resigned from the board with immediate effect. This unexpected action has caused a stir in the technology world, drawing attention and speculation.

Altman's abrupt departure was announced in a blog post by OpenAI, revealing that the board had lost confidence in his leadership abilities. “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI,” the blog post said. 

Altman's departure transpired after a thorough evaluation process by the board, which cited its inability to fulfil its duties due to Altman's lack of communication transparency.

The blog post by OpenAi said, “Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,”

Consequently, Mira Murati, the Chief Technology Officer, assumed the role of interim CEO while a permanent replacement is sought, the company informed in its blog post. 

Altman acknowledged his departure and expressed gratitude for his time at OpenAI and also teased about his forthcoming future endeavours. 

“I loved my time at openai. it was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. most of all i loved working with such talented people. will have more to say about what’s next later,” the ChatGPT co-creator posted on X. 

The sudden departure of Altman is particularly intriguing because of his significant contribution to the development of AI, placing him in the company of the biggest names in technology such as Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. His exit from OpenAI comes at a critical juncture for the company, following co-founder Greg Brockman's resignation as board chair while he remains involved with the company.

OpenAI was first founded in 2015 as a nonprofit organisation with the mission of protecting advanced AI from monopolistic control. But in 2019, Microsoft made a sizable investment that resulted in the organisation's shift to a for-profit structure, raising concerns about the organisation's changing course.
