Geoffrey Hinton, commonly referred to as the 'Godfather of AI,' has raised concerns about the unchecked advancement of technology and its potential consequences for humanity in a recent interview with 60 Minutes. Hinton, who retired from Google earlier this year, called for careful consideration from governments and companies in managing the rapid development of AI.

Need for vigilance

Hinton expressed the belief that within five years, AI might possess superior reasoning abilities compared to humans, signalling a need for increased vigilance. He emphasised that as AI continues to advance, there is growing uncertainty about whether humans fully comprehend the technology's implications.

He noted, "I think we're moving into a period when, for the first time ever, we have things more intelligent than us."

Hinton drew parallels between understanding AI's thought processes and deciphering human minds, highlighting the complexity of comprehending advanced AI systems. He cautioned against the prospect of losing control over AI and stressed the need for responsible development.

"We're entering a period of great uncertainty where we're dealing with things we've never done before," he remarked. "And normally, the first time you deal with something totally novel, you get it wrong. And we can't afford to get it wrong with these things."

While acknowledging the potential for AI to enhance productivity and efficiency, Hinton voiced concerns about job displacement due to automation. He urged immediate action to conduct experiments, gain a better understanding of AI, and establish ethical regulations to guide its usage.

Hinton concluded by acknowledging the possibility of AI surpassing humanity but emphasising the importance of preventing such a scenario through responsible development and regulation. He emphasised the need to ensure that AI remains a tool for the benefit of humanity rather than a potential threat.
