French artificial intelligence firm Mistral AI has announced a staggering fundraising success, securing €385 million in its second funding round within a span of seven months. The funding was led by prominent investors, including Andreessen-Horowitz and LightSpeed Ventures.

While the official valuation remains undisclosed, a source familiar with the matter has estimated Mistral AI's valuation at €2 billion. This valuation would position the Paris-based startup among the top artificial intelligence companies globally.

Founded by former researchers from Meta and Google AI, Mistral AI had previously raised €105 million in June, just a month after its inception. The company has now emerged as a significant player in the AI landscape, backed by influential investors such as Salesforce, BNP Paribas, General Catalyst, La Famiglia, Eric Schmidt, New Wave, Motier Ventures, and Sofina.

In addition to its funding success, Mistral AI introduced Mixtral 8x7B, an open model aimed at becoming Europe's response to established AI platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard. The Mistral AI platform is currently available in beta access and is anticipated to be fully operational by early 2024.

Mistral AI has been actively involved in advocating for changes to the EU AI Act, which is in the process of becoming law. The company had garnered support from the French government in its efforts. While the recent deal on AI legislation was reached on Friday, Mistral AI has not yet commented on the specifics of the agreement.

Looking ahead, Mistral AI has articulated its goals, stating its intent to achieve frontier-level AI capacities in the coming months. The company also plans to develop products tailored for both developers and enterprises, solidifying its position as a key player in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
