Sony unveils PS5 'Slim' with detachable disc drive and 1TB storage

Sony PS5 Slim: Sony has officially unveiled a new model of the PS5, often referred to as the PS5 "Slim." This variant comes with a detachable disc drive and 1TB of internal storage that aims to replace both the existing PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. In the US, the new PS5 model with the drive included is priced at $499.99, while the PS5 Digital Edition stands at $449.99.

The PS5 "Slim" boasts a reduction in volume by over 30 per cent and a weight reduction of up to 24 per cent, depending on the model. The disc drive is situated on a removable side panel, resulting in a slimmer design. Sony offers four separate cover panels with varying textures — glossy on the top and matte on the bottom.

New design

For those opting for the base PS5 Digital Edition, there is an option to purchase the Blu-ray disc drive separately at $79.99. Notable changes in the new model include two slits on each side and dual USB-C ports at the front, replacing the single USB-C and USB-A ports from the existing PS5. Both PS5 models now come with 1TB of storage, an increase from the 825GB in the current PS5.

A horizontal stand is included with the new PS5 model, and a separate vertical stand, compatible with all PS5 models, can be purchased for $29.99. The new PS5 model will hit the US market in November, priced at $449.99 without a drive or $499.99 with one, and it will roll out globally in subsequent months, becoming the sole model once the existing PS5 inventory is depleted. In Europe, the price ranges from €449.99 for the Digital Edition to €549.99 with the drive, while in the UK, it's £479.99 with the drive or £389.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition.

The official announcement follows months of leaks and previous reports suggesting Sony's development of a PS5 model with a detachable drive. Additionally, Sony recently concluded a PS5 sale with significant price reductions in various regions.
