HAL Aircraft Leads India-Malaysia Defense Deal Race

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Malaysia on February 7 and 8 to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. A major highlight of this diplomatic mission is the defense pitch featuring the HAL Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft. New Delhi aims to fulfill Malaysia's requirement for seven coast guard planes by showcasing the Dornier's proven 10-hour endurance and surveillance capabilities.

Beyond this flagship offer India is also proposing collaboration on Su-30 fighter jet maintenance since both nations operate this Russian platform. Discussions may further extend to refitting Scorpene class submarines and supplying naval vessels from Indian shipyards. This visit underscores India's Act East policy as it seeks to transform from a defense importer to a key security partner in Southeast Asia. Trade and digital technology agreements will likely round out the agenda to cement ties with Kuala Lumpur.
