How Pakistan Army Turned Defeat into Lifetime Power

Pakistan has reshaped its military structure with the creation of the Defence Forces Headquarters and the appointment of Asim Munir as the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces. This move, enacted through the 27th Constitutional Amendment in late 2025, eliminates the old post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and places one officer above the army, navy, and air force chiefs. The Chief of Defence Forces now controls joint operations, procurement, nuclear command appointments, and holds a fixed five‑year term that no prime minister can shorten. The driving force behind this change was Pakistan’s defeat in Operation Sindoor, the four‑day clash with India in May 2025. During the exchange of missiles and air strikes, Pakistan’s response was slow, fragmented, and poorly coordinated. Reviews concluded that modern wars demand decisions in minutes, not hours, and the lack of unified command left the country vulnerable.
