Video: Russia to Deliver Nuclear Attack Submarine to India
Russia is set to deliver INS Chakra 3, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, to India. Built on the Akula-class design (Project 971U Shchuka B), it is 110 metres long, displaces 14,000 tons submerged, and is powered by a 190 MW nuclear reactor, giving it high underwater speed and unlimited range. Armed with eight torpedo tubes, it can launch torpedoes, mines, anti-submarine rockets, and Kalibr cruise missiles, carrying over 40 weapons. For India, Chakra 3 features quieter machinery, anechoic coatings, and Indian sensors. Unlike Arihant-class SSBNs meant for nuclear deterrence, this SSN targets ships, submarines, and land targets with conventional missiles. India is also developing six indigenous nuclear attack submarines with similar advanced capabilities.
