Dubai's Fresh Food May Last Only 10 Days: US-Iran War Side Effects
The CEO of global logistics giant Kuehne+Nagel has warned that Dubai's stocks of fresh produce could last only about 10 days due to severe disruptions from the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Airspace restrictions over the Persian Gulf have reduced global air cargo capacity by 18-22 percent, while maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz—handling over 70 percent of Gulf foodstuffs—face major interruptions, including partial port suspensions at Jebel Ali. Gulf states import 80-90 percent of their food, making perishables like fruits, vegetables, and dairy highly vulnerable to delays. Despite the risks, UAE authorities state that strategic reserves of essential staples cover 4-6 months of needs, supported by diversified sourcing and daily market monitoring, helping maintain stability in core commodities and prevent immediate shortages. The situation highlights vulnerabilities in import-reliant economies during geopolitical tensions.
