Has Trump Cleverly Dragged UK & France into Iran War?
Iran launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles and drones across the Gulf in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Even though Britain and France played no role in the original attacks on Iran their forces and bases were directly endangered by Tehran’s broad counteroffensive.Iranian projectiles came within hundreds of metres of British troops at Bahrain Naval Base, home to the US Fifth Fleet and UK Royal Navy operations. A suspected Iranian drone struck RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, the first direct hit on UK sovereign territory. In the United Arab Emirates an Iranian drone damaged a French naval air base hangar. UK and French personnel at Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait also faced incoming fire as Iran targeted Western-linked installations across Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE.UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the strikes as reckless and disproportionate against countries that stayed out of the initial offensive. Both nations have now authorised defensive use of their bases, reinforced air defences and vowed to protect their 200,000-plus citizens and troops in the region without committing to full-scale offensive operations.
