Why Oil Prices Are About to Explode: Ras Tanura Refinery Attack Explained
Saudi Arabia has shut down operations at the Ras Tanura oil refinery after it was struck by Iranian Shahed-136 drones. The facility, one of the largest in the Middle East with a refining capacity of 550,000 barrels per day, experienced a fire that was quickly contained. As a precaution, Aramco has suspended both refining and export activities while safety inspections and damage assessments are carried out. The shutdown disrupts crude loading at the terminal, which normally handles the majority of Saudi shipments to Asia, Europe, and the United States. Brent crude prices have surged by nearly 9 percent in response, reflecting fears of tighter supply amid escalating hostilities involving Iran, the US, and Israel. No casualties have been reported, but the incident underscores vulnerabilities in Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure and raises concerns about global oil market stability.
