Assam Flood Fury: 15+ Stranded on Jonai Char as Dikari River Overflows | Rescue Ops Underway
Rising floodwaters triggered by continuous rainfall and a sudden swell in the Dikari River have wreaked havoc in Assam‘s Jonai, stranding more than 15 people and around 100 cattle on a riverine char while inundating several villages.
The worst-hit area is Koraibari Char in Telam, where floodwaters surged into the island early on Sunday, cutting off all access routes and leaving residents stranded. The swift current and steadily rising water level have made evacuation difficult.
According to local sources, the marooned residents and nearly 100 cattle have been unable to leave the char since Sunday morning, raising major concerns over their safety. The overflowing Dikari River has submerged homes, roads, and farmlands across several parts of Jonai, completely disrupting road connectivity.
The Jonai administration has initiated efforts to deploy personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to carry out rescue operations under challenging weather conditions. Officials have advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain highly alert.
