Assam On High Alert As Bhutan GLOF Triggers Flood Alerts In India As Artificial Lake Forms

A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in Bhutan on 30 October 2026 has triggered flood alerts across Assam and West Bengal. The event formed an artificial lake on the Sankosh River, putting downstream areas, particularly Assam’s Dhubri district, on high alert. Authorities have issued a special flood advisory for vulnerable regions in Dhubri and Kokrajhar.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that teams are closely monitoring the situation and remain in constant contact with the NDRF. The National Disaster Response Force is on alert and ready to respond if needed. Residents have been advised to stay vigilant, follow official updates, and cooperate with local officials.
